Description

The Unarchiver is a small and easy to use program that can unarchive many different kinds of archive files. It will open common formats such as Zip, RAR (including v5), 7-zip, Tar, Gzip and Bzip2. It will also open many older formats, such as StuffIt, DiskDoubler, LZH, ARJ and ARC. It will even open other kinds of files, like ISO and BIN disc images, some Windows .EXE installers. The list is actually much longer — see the program homepage for the full list.

The Unarchiver also tries to detect and correctly handle the filename encoding in the archives it opens, allowing you to open files from every part of the world without getting garbled filenames.

The Unarchiver aims to be the only unarchiving program you will ever need, and to stay out of your way.

Until this version 3.1.2 it was a 5 star now maybe 4

Then they had a problem with 3.11.2, which they think they fixed in 3.11.3. However there are more problems with version 3.11.3. Before the last two versions, I could choose ‘Compress “some directory”’ from the finder menu, and then few minutes later I could uncompress it by using “The Unarchiver”. Now, randomly I get a notofication about the encoding the compressed file uses. So i am temporarily using command line tools to do the operations. BTW, there seems to be another bug that comes up if you select more than about 250 files from Finder and invoke “The Unarchiver”. Then somehow “The Unarchiver” memory gets corrupted, and the menus no longer work(e.g. Quit button disappears.) and the program hangs. Have to force quit it externally. I should mention Xee 3.5.3(marketed by the same company) inherited a bug in the new release, that it can no longer reliably read .cbr and .cbz(or .rar or .zip) files reliably either. Some pages show up as noise, where as other programs(like Comic Reader). So on Xee I rolled back to 3.5.2

Poor error handling

Been using this for years. The app works fine most of the time, but when something is wrong with the archive, the app doesn’t give anything resembling useful information about the error. It just basically tells you something’s wrong. What’s wrong? No details whatsoever other than it can’t extract. When that happens, I have to turn to the unfortunately abandoned UnRarX, which has a test function which tells me what’s wrong with the archive, such as a corrupted part.

Cannot deselect file formats in Preferences

I just installed The Unarchiver, and am attempting to set its preferences. When I try to deselect a file format which I do not want The Unarchiver to expand by default, it will not allow me to do so. It pops up a dialog saying «Set another app as the default app for selected file types if you wish. In smaller print, it describes the procedure to assign default applications to specific file types.

This behavior is extremely annoying. Even if I did not already know how to assign default applications, I should not be required to do so before I can deselect a file type in The Unarchiver’s preferences. This behavior is enough to stop me from using the application. Please fix this obnoxious behavior. It is unreasonable.

Description

Xee is an streamlined and convenient image viewer and browser. It is similar to macOS’s Preview.app, but lets you easily browse the entire contents of folders and archives, move and copy image files quickly, and supports many more image formats. It also shows animation for formats which support this.

It is designed to take full advantage of touch controls, allowing you to swipe through images in a folder one by one. You can of course also zoom and rotate files using multi-touch gestures.

Xee can also display huge amounts of metadata from image files. For this, it uses Image::ExifTool, one of the most comprehensive metadata libraries.

Loading images directly from archive files is also possible, and Xee works very well as a comic book reader.

Xee offers multiple visual styles. This allows you to, for instance, pick one which is less distracting while sorting through photos.

Ratings and Reviews

Don’t purchase. Xee 2 was a much better app.

But since its not supported by newer versions of OSX and because I liked it so much, I purchased the new version. I wouldnt have guessed they would degrate basic functionality the way they did. Full screen is soemtimes buggy. Auto fit images doesnt always auto fit (and if you zoom an image, the zoom on next image is completely random, sometimes smaller, sometimes larger). It’s a shame, the old version no longer works and this one has clearly been abandon for at least a couple of years, so dont expect any updates or fixes.

Excellent viewer!

I rarely write reviews but I feel compelled to because I love this program and I don’t think the ratings here reflect how good it is. I’m using the latest version, which at the moment is 3.5.3, and many of the complaints I’ve read in these reviews apparently apply to previous versions because they don’t apply to the version I have.

I’ve used several other image viewing programs, both paid and unpaid, but this is my favorite. I shoot and sort a lot of images and Xee has some key features that really help me. It has a pretty sophisticated copy/move system where you can dynamically specify up to 10 destination folders and then move or copy each image into one of those destinations with a keystroke. I love the fact that almost all of the many commands in the system are assignable to keyboard keys via a very easy to use Preferences->Keyboard screen. So I’ve got my whole keyboard mapped out for quick scanning, zooming, sorting, and even some rudimentary editing (just rotating, flipping, and cropping). For example, I assigned the keys 1 through 5 to move the current image to one of 5 different destinations, so it is easy to zip through and sort a bunch of images into good/better/best/reject, for example, or into “bride”/“groom”/“other”, etc., with a single keystroke.

I do have a few quibbles and I’ve given some feedback to MacPaw so I’m hoping we’ll continue to see improvements. But for $4 it sure filled a big hole in the Mac image handling for me!

Below Average User Interface

This application does in fact display various graphic formats; however, the user interface is crude and hardly intuitive and the application itself shows its age. With a little extra effort this application could be on the top of the heap. As it stands, it’s a dissappointment.

When the application starts it does not open a typical application window. It puts the icon in the dock and once you click on the icon the menu bar is parked at the top and one has to physically click on it, select file and open a file or directory. I would have expected a more intitive layout with directories on the left and picture content on the right (more like finder). You cannot browse through directories, select multiple directories or really do much with the interface that cannot already be done with scarcely more work than one can do with finder already.

Yes, it’s a little better than that, but for a paid application I would have expected the author to spend a lot more effort on the user interface and making the picture browsing a lot more like what is out of the box with Windows machines. After all, that is why people buy apps like this — to get what Windows does already out-of-the-box. It’s a shame really that nothing on Apple comes anywhere near Windows for picture file browsing.

Had I to do it over again, I probably would not have spend the $4, but on the other hand, it’s only $4.

macOS NDI Desktop Source Monitor

NDI Monitor allows monitoring of broadcast NDI Protocol IP Video Sources using a macOS computer. Audio is also monitored, and sources with an alpha channel are keyed against a checkerboard background.

NDI Monitor automatically finds all NDI sources on the local area network and adds them to the source selection popup menu.

There is also a checkbox to use a Low Bandwidth NDI connection to the source and an audio mute setting.

You can change how Tally is returned to the NDI Source using the menu items. You can view frame rate, resolution, timecode and embedded NDI Metadata.

NDI | HX Sources are also supported, and a PTZ control panel automatically pops up when an NDI device advertises PTZ support. SpaceMouse and SpaceNavigator 3D Controllers can be used to control PTZ.

The SRC button allows you to enter a partial text filter to limit the list of sources shown to match the filter. Very useful if you have lots of NDI Sources on your network.
